I've been peeping Jenna Shea for a minute now. For now, she's strictly a SHOW invention, with very few professional photos aside from her work with that magazine. To my knowledge, she hasn't done any music videos or magazines outside of SHOW. But I've seen this girl in person and she's pretty impressive. There's been a little controvery surrounding her backside and whether it's real, but all parts seem genuine as far as I can tell. (Click pics to enlarge)

As is the case in any industry, there are always sleepers - genre favorites that may not get all the hype on the front pages, but behind the scenes they're the ones people are really talking about. Neshelle fits this description. For several years, while Melyssa and Esther and Angel got the covers, the message boards and blogs were talking about this cutie from Detroit. She's been in Hush magazine, as well as KING and Smooth, but where she mainly excelled was on the internet. No doubt about it, Neshelle is an industry favorite.

For some reason, Olivia Munn has become a favorite even in the urban market, which is somewhat strange given her relative lack of curves for that niche.
Anyway, I posted these because of the amazing, photo-realistic retouching more than anything. Urban photographers and magazine editors need to take note - this is how you do it.

I can't tell you how many times I see this sort of thing. A photographer shoots a dope model but decides he wants to either: 1) keep her all to himself for future shoots, or 2) put his photo branding ahead of her name recognition. Models, you will never get anywhere from this arrangement. There are countless anonymous models floating around the net like this -- girls who could've been recruited for bigger and better things like music videos or magazines and made money, had they been more in control of their images.

This should have been part of the "Getting Quality Photos" post in the Model Advice section, so I'll add it there. By the way, nothing against this particular photographer. I actually think this is a pretty good photo. You can check out his work here.

It's important to remember the foundations of the genre. Eboni Renee was XXL's Eye Candy in March 2003 and Eye Candy of the Year in 2004. But Eboni hit the video vixen scene right before it reached its peak, so her fame didn't mean the same thing monetarily as it did for girls that came later, like Buffie. Anyway, she also marks one of the few times in the history of video vixens a darker model was on top regrettably. I couldn't find any verifiable contact pages for Eboni, so I guess you'll just have to settle for nostalgia.

So Melyssa Ford was in my hood today on Crenshaw Blvd. for the Lady Hennessy promotional tour. A friend of mine took this pic for me, and like many others, he said she looks even better in person and radiates intelligence. I'm a little bitter I wasn't able to meet with her, but maybe next time.

I had a tough time with whether I should crop this shot or not. I ultimately decided not to crop because it incorporates more colors (the sky) and makes the picture more interesting. What do you think? Wrong decision?

I first learned about Lakeisha Brown when she was taping a reality show called "America's Hottest Honey." A friend called me and said: "There's this girl on the show and she's really pretty." Since this particular friend doesn't say that about many models, I knew it had to be true. Regrettably, "America's Hottest Honeys" never made it onto the airwaves (instead we got E!'s "Candy Girls"). But Lakeisha is the real deal. She reminds me of an early Melyssa Ford, and interestingly they're both Scorpios. Anyway, this girl has kind of disappeared from the scene. Fortunately, SHOW magazine got her before she ducked out.

Every so often I will post one of the models I shot in the 90s just as a kind of retrospective on the state of the industry. Ferrari Farris was very hot in '95. She was the lead video vixen in Domino's "Sweet Potato Pie," which was poppin' back in the day, and appeared on the cover of Ebony Man magazine's swimsuit issue. The photo I took of her on the left was taken in 1995. The ad on the right is a Walmart commercial that just aired last month, in 2009, nearly 15 years later. Now ask yourself, how many of today's urban models will be working 15 years from now? I'd say Melyssa Ford is the only one I can think of, given that she hit the market in around 2000.
